Com Tam Nhu Y Restaurant is a family-run Vietnamese spot tucked along El Cajon Boulevard, serving up traditional dishes with a focus on hearty, authentic flavors. This is a place where locals come for no-frills comfort food rather than polished dining; the vibe is straightforward and unpretentious, with the quiet bustle of a neighborhood kitchen that’s clearly a labor of love.

The menu leans heavily into classic Vietnamese staples like Com Tam (broken rice dishes), various noodle soups such as Hu Tieu, Pho GA Long, and Southern-style fermented fish soups. You’ll also find some standout combos meant for sharing, which makes it a good spot if you’re visiting with friends or family and want to sample a variety of dishes. The clay pot fish (Ca Kho To) and shrimp-crab noodle soups receive particular nods for their rich, satisfying flavors. Drinks like taro and honeydew smoothies, often made fresh with real ingredients rather than powder, provide a creamy, refreshing complement to the meal, especially on warmer days.

The atmosphere here reflects the local Vietnamese community: the dining area is modest, busy, and casual rather than polished or trendy. Expect straightforward, home-style food that often draws a crowd of Vietnamese diners, which speaks to its authenticity. Service is friendly but can feel a bit stretched during busy times—this is a family-run operation, and sometimes the drinks may arrive after the food or waitstaff may juggle several tables, especially when larger groups come in.

Parking is generally decent compared to other spots in the area, making it a convenient stop for a laid-back lunch or dinner. The best time to visit would be outside peak hours if you want a little more breathing room and attentive service, but the lively buzz during busier periods adds an honest, lived-in sense of the place.

Who will enjoy Com Tam Nhu Y?

  • Anyone looking for well-executed, authentic Vietnamese dishes that focus on depth of flavor rather than presentation.
  • Fans of Hu Tieu or Com Tam who prefer a homestyle dining experience loved by locals.
  • Those curious about Southern Vietnamese specialties like fermented fish soups and clay pot dishes.
  • Visitors who appreciate a casual, no-frills neighborhood setting away from more tourist-oriented Vietnamese restaurants in San Diego.

Overall, this is the kind of spot that suits a casual meal where the food takes center stage more than the decor or service bells and whistles. If you’re craving authentic pho bowls, richly flavored soups, or just a solid Vietnamese meal paired with fresh smoothies, Com Tam Nhu Y delivers on that reliably, especially if you’re comfortable with a family-style, busy dining atmosphere.

The Hu Tieu was maybe the best soup I’ve ever had in my life. Unbelievable. Only Vietnamese people in there when I went. I can’t wait to return!!!

Really tasty, authentic Vietnamese food here. Fast and friendly service as well. We had the Vietnamese Crepe (Bánh Xèo) and a bowl of Seafood Egg Noodle Soup (Mì Tôm Cua). Both were very well done

Only reviewing the boba smoothie which we saw advertised on the store front poster. Ordered taro smoothie with boba. The guy made it in front of us using fresh taro, not powder. Very tasty and creamy; you can still taste the taro (wasn't ground up too fine), just the way I like it. Boba also had nice gummy chewiness to them. Picture menu of their dishes look enticing. Bless these hardworking folks who open 7 days a week to feed us.

Pros: -Decent parking -Prices are good -Com tam is standard -The drinks (sinh to) are cheap than what I am used to seeing Con -Sinh to honeydew and soursop were just okay. They use power and kerns juice.

Food is good and authentic. Prices are pretty low. I only gave 3 stars because service is pretty bad. I know it is a family run restaurant but still. Our whole meal came out before our drinks did and it was bottled water and a can of soy bean milk. Perhaps it was because there was a large party in there and the only one taking orders and running the food is their son. Would give this place another shot to see if service was due to being busy but food was good. We got the Com Tam and dinner for 2 for the 4 of us. Update: Monday night early dinner. Much better service. Less crowded.

Bun Nuoc Leo was delicious. It was a generous portion filled with pork, fish, & shrimp. Each bowl came with its own portion of veggies (bean sprouts, mint leaves, cabbage, and chives) which is awesome. The broth was a little salty, easily fixed with lime. Would definitely come back for this particular dish.

Most of the dishes were good but the fish soup was a bit too sour for my taste. Great value and friendly service.
